Purpose of vacuum pump on a car:
- The vacuum source of a vacuum power steering system varies between gasoline and diesel vehicles. On a car driven by gasoline engine, the ignition cycle of the engine generates a high vacuum pressure at the intake manifold that provides an adequate vacuum source for the vacuum power steering system;
- On a car driven by a diesel engine, due to the compression ignition (CI) working mode of the engine, the vacuum pressure level at the intake manifold is not sufficient. A separate vacuum pump therefore needs to be installed as the vacuum source;
- Besides, for gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines designed to meet higher emission and environment protection standards, the vacuum pressure required for the vacuum braking steering system can’t be provided at the intake manifold either. A vacuum pump is therefore required as the vacuum source.
