Timing chain is a familiar concept for drivers and some friends. It is common knowledge that timing chain should be replaced at regular intervals depending on actual conditions of the car. But you may be uncertain about the time and method of replacement. What is the total mileage before a timing chain needs to changed?
A timing chain should be replaced after 200 thousand km of mileage is reached
Some car owners may hold the view that timing chains are maintenance-free and can be used as long as cars. This is not true. According to 4S mechanics, a timing chain should be replaced after the car runs 180 to 200 thousand km in total. This is only a general reference range. The timing chains on some cars may fail after 100 thousand km of mileage, while others may be used until 250 to 300 thousand km is reached. Nonetheless, for the sake of safety, all timing chains should be changed after 200 thousand km of mileage even if they don’t exhibit any sign of failure.
A seriously damaged timing chain should be changed in time
Many car owners know that their timing chains are changed at the mileage of 80 thousand km, but know little about characteristics of timing chains. In fact, the biggest advantage of timing chain is that it doesn’t break even upon expiry of its service life. Instead, it gradually grows longer. The possible consequences include lifted air valve, unstable engine, weak acceleration, and engine failure due to slippage. If your car runs at full load or high speed frequently, the timing chain must be inspected at the mileage of 70-80 or 100 thousand km. Continue to use the car if everything is fine, or replace the timing chain in time if any serious wear or other damage is found!
