A failed hydraulic tappet often clicks or clatters. Such noise is louder when the engine is in a cold state, and may automatically disappear after warm-up of the engine.
If noise is heard from all or almost all hydraulic tappets, it may be caused by dirty or glued engine oil, insufficient oil pressure, or presence of oil foams due to water in the oil.
If only one tappet generates noise, the possible reasons include the following: too tight engagement between the plunger piston and the tappet body, soft or broken plunger piston spring, oil leakage of the ball valve, worn plunger piston, improper installation or loss of the snap ring, and insufficient pressure of oil delivered to the plunger piston.
If the hydraulic plunger piston is not properly adjusted or if the ball valve leaks, the plunger piston should be completely cleaned in dedicated solvent such as acetone before further use.
