Function of the 06H198205N balance shaft: ensure smoother and more stable engine operation.
During operation of an engine, the piston moves rapidly with variable velocity. The piston speed reaches zero at the top and bottom stop positions and maximum value at the middle point.
As the piston reciprocates linearly at high speed in the cylinder, high inertial force is generated on the piston, piston pin, and connecting rod. Although the counterweight on the connecting rod can effectively balance such inertial force, only part of the motion mass is involved in linear movement, and the remaining part is involved in rotation.
Consequently, apart from the top and bottom stop positions, complete balance of inertial force can’t be achieved at any point. The engine therefore experiences vibration.
In order to eliminate such vibration, the designers have resorted to many approaches. For example, a light piston can be used to reduce weight of the moving part and to increase rigidity of the crankshaft, or a V-shape engine layout with a 60° angle can be adopted.
Adding a balance shaft (the part shown in the middle section in the above figure) is another common practice. Simply put, the balance shaft is a shaft that is equipped with an eccentric mass and rotates in synchronization with the crankshaft. The vibration force generated by the eccentric mass along the opposite direction helps achieve good engine balance, thus reducing engine vibration.
