Reasons for abnormal sound of an engine camshaft:
- Too large gap between the camshaft and its bushing;
- Rotation of the camshaft bushing;
- Deformation of the camshaft;
- Too large axial clearance of the camshaft;
- The camshaft bushing alloy has burned down of fallen off.
The abnormal sound of the camshaft occurs when the engine is at work. It comes from the camshaft bearing and the shaft, and appears as a rhythmic, dull sound like metal knocking. In idle status or at a slightly higher speed, the sound can be noticeable from camshaft bearings.
How to identify the camshaft as the source of abnormal sound:
- If the sound is generated on the camshaft side, adjust the throttle valve gradually. If the sound is clear in idle status, noticeable at a medium speed, and scattered, weaker, or absent at a high speed, the sound is probably caused by the camshaft;
- Remove the valve chamber cover, and hold down the camshaft with a metal rod. Determine if the sound has changed. If it has changed, the sound is caused by the camshaft.
