What are the types of shock absorbers?

There are two main types of shock absorbers in terms of damping material: hydraulic and pneumatic. Variable-damping shock absorbers can also be found in the market.

Hydraulic shock absorber

Hydraulic shock absorber is widely used for vehicle suspension systems. It works on the following principle: When the car frame and wheel axles are in relative reciprocating motion, the piston in the cylinder of a shock absorber reciprocates accordingly. The oil in the enclosure of the shock absorber flows cyclically from one inner cavity to another via some small holes. In this process, the friction between the liquid and the inner wall and the internal friction of the liquid molecules generate vibration damping force.

Pneumatic shock absorber

Pneumatic shock absorber is a new type of shock absorber that has been developed since 1960s. Its structure features a floating piston at the bottom of the cylinder. An enclosed air chamber is formed by the floating piston and one end of the cylinder and is filled with high-pressure nitrogen. The floating position is equipped with a sealing O-ring with a large cross section area that completely separates oil from air. The working piston is also provided with a compression valve and an extension valve that can change cross section of the passage depending on movement speed of the piston.

When vehicle wheels jump up and down, the working piston of the shock absorber reciprocates in the oil, creating a pressure difference between upper and lower chambers of the piston. The compression valve and extension valve are pushed open under pressure to allow cyclic flow of the oil. The high damping force exerted by the valves on the pressure oil results in vibration attenuation.

Shock absorber with variable resistance

In a car using shock absorbers with variable resistance, air spring parts with variable rigidity are typically adopted for suspensions. After the pressure of an air spring increases, that in the corresponding shock absorber air chamber will also rise. Such pressure change will alter the oil orifice size and consequently the damping rigidity.

Shock absorbers are wear parts in operation of vehicles. Their performance therefore has a direct bearing on driving smoothness and service life of other parts. Hence, we should always maintain good working conditions of these absorbers. The following methods may be used to check if they function well.
