What is the working principle of stabilizer bar?

When the left and right wheels of a car bounce up and down at the same time causing the vehicle body to only move vertically, if the suspensions on both sides experience equal deformation, the horizontal stabilizer bar will rotate freely in its bushing, and won’t play a role in vehicle control.

If the suspensions on both sides experience unequal deformation and the vehicle body inclines laterally on the road, one side of the frame will approach the spring support, and the end of the stabilizer bar on that side will move upward relative to the frame. The other side of the frame will move away from the spring support, and the corresponding end of the stabilizer bar will move downward relative to the frame. However, during inclination of the vehicle body and the frame, the middle part of the horizontal stabilizer bar remains still relative to the frame. This means while the body is inclined, the longitudinal parts on different sides of the stabilizer bar will deviate towards different directions. As a result, the stabilizer bar will be subject to torsion, and the side arm will bend to increase the suspension angle stiffness.

The internal torsion torque generated by the flexible stabilizer bar prevents deformation of the suspension spring, and consequently reduces lateral inclination and lateral angular vibration of the vehicle body. When the torsion bar arms on both sides bounce in the same direction, the horizontal stabilizer bar doesn’t work. When they bounce in opposite directions, the middle part of the horizontal stabilizer bar will be subject to torsion.
