The main symptoms of a broken steering gear assembly include deviation from route, abnormal noise during turning or operating the steering wheel with the car staying still, and difficulty in straightening the steering wheel.
- Deviation from route: If the car deviates from route under normal tire pressure and flat road conditions, it is typically caused by a problem of the steering gear. The steering gear is an important part that controls the direction of a car. A broken steering gear can disable normal turning function of the car and cause it to run out of way.
- Abnormal noise during turning or operating the steering wheel with the car staying still: If the car generates abnormal noise during turning, or clatters at rest when the steering wheel is operated, the steering gear or tires may have failed. Malfunction in the steering gear or tires can cause abnormal noise during turning, and requires timely maintenance.
- Difficulty in straightening the steering wheel: If the steering wheel straightens slowly or fails to straighten automatically, the steering gear has been damaged. A broken steering gear prevents normal straightening of the steering wheel, and should be replaced in time.
Reasons for failure of a steering gear assembly:
- Difficult steering: There are foreign objects in the steering hydraulic pipelines that block the flow control valve of the steering pump or loosen the connection parts in the steering power system, resulting in steering fluid leakage.
- Abnormal sound during turning: The steering system runs under excessive load, causing excessive wear of the stator and rotor in the steering pump, and resulting in irregular movement of the oil in the pump and consequently abnormal noise.
- Oil leakage of the steering system: The oil seal between the oil pipe and the steering pump is damaged. The steering system mainly consists of steering pipe, steering wheel, steering shaft, and columns.
