What are consequences of abnormal sound of a timing chain?

  1. A loose timing chain can lead to slippage. A timing error can cause the engine to jitter and impair acceleration function, leading to higher fuel consumption. In serious cases, the engine may fail to start.
  2. Compared with traditional belt drive, a chain drive system enjoys the advantages of reliable transmission, good durability, and space saving. The whole system consists of gears, chain, tensioner, and other components. The hydraulic tensioner can be adjusted automatically to maintain constant tension. Since the tensioner is maintenance-free, it can work as long as the engine. The benefits include higher safety and reliability and significantly reduced engine operation and maintenance cost.
  3. Abnormal sound of the timing chain is mostly due to the following reasons: lack of tension of the chain tensioner, prolonged timing chain, excessive wear of the chain guide plate, and abnormal condition of the timing sprocket. Replacement of certain mechanical components may be required to solve the problem.
  4. In order to prevent the chain gap to grow wider due to wear, a chain tightener is installed on the system for automatic tensioning of the chain. The power required by the chain tightener is provided by oil pressure. If the lubrication system fails, the abnormal oil pressure may cause excessive chain gap and noise. Timely inspection and maintenance are needed to prevent slippage and resulting engine failure due to large gap. The noise is typically attributable to low oil pressure, and may be louder in idle status and quieter during acceleration.
