What are the functions of tappet and rocker arm?
The tappet transmits thrust of the cam to a push rod or a valve stem, allowing the push rod or the valve to overcome the force of the valve spring and move. It also bears the lateral force exerted by the camshaft during its rotation. It is installed on the cylinder body or on the pilot hole in the cylinder head. It is typically made of nickel/chromium alloy iron castings or chilled alloy iron castings.
The rocker arm serves the main purpose of changing force transmission direction. Acting as a lever, the rocker arm changes the direction of the force from the push rod and transmits it to the end of the valve stem, thus pushing open the valve. The lift of the valve is changed by adjusting the ratio between power arm length and resistance arm length (rocker arm ratio). These two arm parts are typically not equal in length. The arm on the valve side is 30%~50% longer than that on the push rod side. This leads to a higher valve lift.
