Timing cover is a common component in combustion engines. It is used to protect parts like timing gear and chain or belt. In timing chain applications, the timing cover typically seals the front end of the cylinder, and an engine with a timing belt often has an incomplete timing cover structure.

A timing cover may be produced from metal or plastic. An engine equipped with a timing chain usually has one metal cover, while an engine equipped with a timing belt may have a cover made of different materials.

A timing cover on a car protects timing gear, belt, or chain. A timing cover may work in conjunction with a timing belt. In these applications, the front part of the engine is typically enclosed with oil seal and installed on the cylinder body or head protruding from crank and camshaft. With the engine sealed, the timing belt cover only serves to protect the belt against damage. Such cover can be made of metal or plastic, or consist of different parts.

A multi-piece timing belt may even contain metal and plastic parts at the same time. A timing cover gasket is often used together with a timing belt cover, though they are designed to prevent ingress of contaminants into the belt. If oil leakage occurs on the crank or camshaft, the timing belt may be polluted by oil, and the timing belt needs to be replaced.

The timing cover gasket may also be polluted by the oil, which causes it to expand and become functionless. In some cases, the seal, belt, and gasket are replaced at the same time. Some engines use a timing bolt protected by a special timing bolt cover instead of a synchronous belt. Metal cover is typically used for these engines.
